Another Republican Reportedly Plans to Enter GOP Presidential Primary

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is reportedly preparing for a 2024 presidential run, according to sources familiar with his intentions.

The Wall Street Journal had the scoop:

Mr. Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, is testing a message with GOP voters in key early states focused on unity and optimism as some Republicans say it is time to move on from the Trump era. Mr. Trump has announced a bid for president in the 2024 election.

Jennifer DeCasper, a Scott senior adviser, said he was “excited to share his vision of hope and opportunity and hear the American people’s response.”

What isn’t clear yet, some people close to Mr. Scott acknowledge, is whether the GOP base that enthusiastically embraced Mr. Trump is interested in that message.

While his voting record regularly ranks among the most conservative in the Senate, Mr. Scott has sought to position himself as a key GOP voice on some of the toughest issues facing America, whether it is police violence or creating more economic opportunities for minorities. Still, he is a relatively unknown quantity with average voters and in addition to competing with Mr. Trump will be challenged by several other candidates also seeking to take over the next generation of leadership.

There were several volatile reactions on social media to the news of Tim Scott considering a presidential run.

Axios reported key developments from what could be a potential Tim Scott campaign:

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has hired former Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner and longtime Republican operative Rob Collins to co-chair a super PAC (Opportunity Matters Fund Action) supporting the senator’s political efforts.

Why it matters: Scott’s decision to tap two politically-savvy Republicans — a former senator who chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a former executive director of the NRSC — is a sign that he’s moving closer to launching a 2024 presidential campaign.

  • If Scott announced a presidential bid, the super PAC would be the center of his political operation. The PAC has banked over $17 million, according to a source familiar with its finances. Scott gave over $21 million to Republican candidates in the last election cycle.
  • Scott, the only Black Republican senator, is traveling to South Carolina next Thursday to hold a listening tour and commemorate Black History Month — the day after former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is set to launch her own presidential campaign in her home state.
  • Scott is also planning to visit Iowa the following week to discuss the importance of faith in America.

Recent reports indicated Nikki Haley is also preparing to enter her name in the 2024 GOP Presidential Primary.
