Jennifer-Ruth Green, theĀ GOP midterm candidate running to unseat Democrat Rep. Frank Mrvan, D-Ind in Indiana’s First Congressional District, received support on Twitter after Politico outed her as a victim of sexual assault.
Here’s some background info from Fox News:
Adam Wren, a correspondent for Politico, wrote a wide-ranging profile of Green last week that included revelations obtained from Green’s military records that she was a victim of a sexual assault while serving in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Air Force. Despite several pleas from Green not to publish the previously undisclosed details of the assault, Politico moved forward with publication.

According to the Politico report, the documents “were obtained by a public records request and provided to Politico by a person outside the Mrvan campaign.” Green disputes the claim and says she believes they were obtained “illegally,” and shopped around by her Democratic opponent, Rep. Mrvan.
Green said that Politico’s decision to out her as a survivor of sexual assault, without her permission, made her feel victimized again.
“The reality of it is ā like I said at one point in my life to my assailant, ‘No. Please stop. Don’t.’ ā Ā and he did what he wanted to do ā¦ This is the exact same situation all over again, all because there was a man who wanted some sort of gratification,”Ā Green toldĀ Fox News Digital.

Iām a survivor of sexual trauma in the military. I am being forced to share this information outside of my own timeline and for the first time publicly because my Congressman, Frank Mrvan, and his cronies illegally obtained my military records describing my sexual assault. (3/11)

I believe after sharing my assault against the advice of some in my command, my career was intentionally derailed. The paperwork Congressman Mrvan illegally obtained contains information that reflects me in a negative light. (5/11)

Here’s the text from Green’s statement titled: “Statement on Mrvan and Allies Illegally Obtaining Greenās Military Records, Politico Outing Sexual Assault”
Today Jennifer-Ruth Green, candidate for Congress in Indianaās 1st Congressional District, released the following statement responding to Congressman Frank Mrvan and his cronies illegally obtaining Greenās military records,Ā attempting to smear her military career and working with Politico to out her as a victim of sexual assault while serving in Iraq:
āIām a survivor of sexual trauma in the military. I am being forced to share this information outside of my own timeline and for the first time publicly because my Congressman, Frank Mrvan, and his cronies illegally obtained my military records describing my sexual assault. His team fished the details of my assault to different news outlets, asking them to share misinformation to portray me as a failed military officer who lacks integrity. This is false.
I believe after sharing my assault against the advice of some in my command, my career was intentionally derailed. The paperwork Congressman Mrvan illegally obtained contains information that reflects me in a negative light. I have since appealed the incident with the military, and the entire issue is settled. Clearly, I have progressed as a military member, promoting to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and successfully completing a command tour.
I have written to the U.S. Attorney, the Air Force Inspector General, and the Department of Defense asking them to launch criminal probes into the release of my confidential personnel file.
I am saddened to have to share publicly one of the most private events of my life, and Iām even more saddened that Congressman Mrvan, who I applauded for authoring the Military Sexual Trauma bill, would engage in or tolerate this despicable behavior from his campaign and his allies. Itās unacceptable for every vet, itās unacceptable for every woman, and itās unacceptable for anyone who has ever been a victim of sexual assault.
However, God, my family, my Pastor and his wife, and the mental health providers at the Adam Benjamin VA have been instrumental in helping me thrive after this great difficulty.
As a servant and as a leader, I take my words and my responsibilities seriously. I will continue to serve people with integrity, and I am undeterred by Congressman Mrvanās attacks. As I have always, I will move forward and succeed despite obstacles such as this thrown in my path.ā
“Jennifer-Ruth Green is a conservative Republican, Air Force Academy graduate, combat veteran and serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indiana Air National Guard,” according to her website.
Green, who believes the use of her military documents is a “politically motivated attempt to impactĀ the upcoming election,” vowed not to back down from the fight.
“I’m going to stand up not only for me, but I’m going to stand up for every other survivor, every other vet, every other woman, because I’m not going to let Congressman Frank Mrvan do this, I’m not going to let Adam Wren do this, and I’m just done with it,” Green told Fox News Digital.
Twitter users supported Green and displayed their disgust for the Politico publication.
I had to re read the story a few times, because I was so genuinely shocked by it.
No woman should have to disclose and relive details about her sexual assault because the media and a political opponent decided to use it against her.

The decision by @mrvan4congress to illegally obtain & leak @JenRuthGreenās military records knowing they would out her as a survivor of sexual assault is not only a shameful new low for politics & the media, itās a horrific attack on survivors everywhere.https://t.co/mk47Lnp4Pe

Incredibly ugly that @mrvan4congress and friends are out shopping opposition research on their political opponent @JenRuthGreenās traumatic sexual assault.
And very surprising an outlet like Politico would print it against the victimās wishes.https://t.co/g3F3knPOgp

There is no low to the Democrat Partyās politics of personal destruction.
Jennifer Ruth Green is one strong person and for her opponent to go this low is absolutely disgraceful. https://t.co/RtMQ7OxKpl

I fully support my fellow AF veteran ā¦@JenRuthGreenā©. What the opposition and media did here is victim-shaming and it is despicable. https://t.co/Qdbz3MvYah
