According to Maxwell, an inmate was planning on strangling her in exchange for a cash payment. I can only assume that the alleged cash payment was quite large due to this information from an NBC News report:
The inmate claimed that an additional 20 years in prison would be worth the money she would receive for killing Maxwell, the lawyers wrote.
What amount of money would make anyone consider an additional 20 years in prison? Who had this kind of money to spend on the killing of Maxwell?
Surely, it couldn’t have been some random prisoner on the inside, additionally, Maxwell has been placed under suicide watch:

New York Daily News had more:
“The inmate who made the threat has been moved to the SHU [special housing unit], presumably to protect Ms. Maxwell,” Sternheim wrote.
In federal prisons like Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, special housing units are solitary confinement.
