Is England Ending Their COVID-19 Restrictions This Month?

The current COVID-19 measures in England are scheduled for a review on January 26th.

However, the Sunday Express has reported that a senior government source stated all measures currently in place will be ditched.

The current ‘Plan B’ measures in place, which were brought back in December, include mandatory masks in schools, public transport, and indoor events.

Residents require COVID-19 passports for large venues, such as nightclubs or indoor venues of more than 500 people.

England also has a ‘work from home’ rule in place.

But these measures allegedly will be scrapped in 10 days.

Sunday Express reported:

The news comes as Boris Johnson continues to fight for his political life as fury rages over lockdown parties in Downing Street and a member of his own cabinet demands an end to the drinking culture in his Government.

The end of restrictions means mandatory mask wearing at schools, on public transport and at indoor events, controversial covid passports, and demands that people work from home will finish on January 26.

All that will remain will be a requirement to isolate for five days with a positive covid test and the need to take lateral flow tests for international travel.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid was last night said to be “sure” that the restrictions will not be needed after the January deadline.

The Sunday Express learnt that the Prime Minister had already been handed an ultimatum before Christmas by senior Conservative backbenchers that he would face a leadership vote of confidence if he tried to bring in more restrictions.

Heart Radio commented:

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has also spoken out about the restrictions being lifted over the next few weeks.

“I think the sooner we can lift the final restrictions, the better. I think that’s what the whole country want,” he told BBC.

“I think it’s important that we’re led by the science on this. We had access to the Government scientific and medical advisers, and that’s helped us form our views.

“I hope those restrictions can be lifted as soon as possible, but I want them to be lifted because the medical science says they should be lifted, not simply because the Prime Minister is in a real mess and he’s desperately trying to get out of it.

“So, if it’s the right thing to lift those restrictions, we will vote to lift those restrictions. But we’ll be led by the science as we always have been, not by the politics of propping up a broken Prime Minister.”

This comes after Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said coronavirus cases seem to be ‘plateauing’ in areas first hit by Omicron.

“We see that infections are plateauing in the community, which is good, in London and the South East and the East of England,” she told BBC.

“There are still risings, but much slower in the northern parts of the country.”

While these reports indicate England is treading in the right direction, residents should keep the pressure on their government.

Scrapping ‘Plan B’ measures will not return life to pre-COVID sanity.

It’s no time to relax!
