A man in North Carolina has been arrested and charged with the shooting death of a 5-year-old boy.

The boy was playing outside of his father’s house on his bike Sunday evening when Darius Sessoms, 25, walked up to the boy and shot him in the head.

Worse yet, the boy’s two sisters, who are only 7 and 8, were outside with him and witnessed the murder.

This is a tragic story and our prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Fox 8 has the story on this terrible tragedy:

WILSON, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a 5-year-old was shot and killed on Sunday.

The suspect in the killing, 25-year-old Darius Nathaniel Sessoms, was arrested on Monday, WITN reports.

News outlets report Wilson police identified the victim as Cannon Hinnant.

Police said officers responding to a report of a shooting at a mobile home park found the 5-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.

Capt. Steve Stroud said officers and emergency personnel performed first aid before the child was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he died.

The New York Post with more:

Police say the killing was not random, though they did not offer a motive, according to the news outlet.

Witness Doris Lybrand told WRAL.com that Sessoms ran up to the little boy, put the gun near his head and pulled the trigger before dashing back to his own house.

“My first reaction was he’s playing with the kids,” Lybrand said. “For a second, I thought, ‘That couldn’t happen.’ People don’t run across the street and kill kids.”

After realizing the shooting was real and seeing Cannon’s father’s reaction, the woman said, she ran back inside her house, locked the door and quickly called 911.

Another neighbor said Sessoms and Cannon’s dad had dinner together Saturday night and that Sessoms was at the home earlier Sunday, according to WRAL.com.

A woman claiming to be a cousin of Cannon’s father, Austin Hinnant, created a GoFundMe page for the family and alleged in the bio that Cannon was shot “because he rode into his neighbors yard.”

“[A] sweet soul named Cannon Hinnant was taken from this world over a senseless act,” Christina Prezioso wrote on the GoFundMe page. “A beautiful 5 year old baby boy riding his bicycle was shot by his neighbor point blank in Wilson NC.”

“One minute he is enjoying his life, the next it all ends because he rode into his neighbors yard,” the bio reads. “5 years old guys!! Nothing prepares a parent for the loss of their child. No child should ever have their future stolen from them.”

Sessoms has multiple felony drug charges from over the years, multiple felony probation violations, and charges on his record for possessing stolen firearms, CBS17.com reported.

With all the talk of social injustice in America, and all the hyper-sensative coverage of police officers, this is a strong example of the type of people that police officers protect people from.

With how sudden this tragedy took place, nothing could reasonably have been done to prevent it in that very moment.

However, the monster who killed this innocent boy had a history of felony charges on his record.

This is a powerful reminder that the police need more funding, not less.

Many have pointed out the media hypocrisy in all this, as most major networks are ignoring this story.

Those news outlets' transparency is obvious.

A 5-year-old white boy shot by a black man is not newsworthy to them, because it cuts against their narrative.

Where is the justice for Cannon Hinnant?
