Republicans Say Trump a Better President Than Lincoln In New Poll

One freed the slaves….

….the other is freeing an entire country?

That’s how I see it.

And when you look at it like that, perhaps this new poll isn’t so surprising.

When polled, 53% of Republicans said President Trump is already a better president than Lincoln was.

Yes, Abraham Lincoln!

Even Newsweek has confirmed the story (are they still in business?):

53 percent of Republicans believe that Donald Trump is a better president than Abraham Lincoln, according to a new poll.

The Economist and YouGov published results of its latest polling on U.S. politics this week. One poll gauged Trump's favorability versus Lincoln, who was the U.S. president between 1861 and 1865 and who steered America through the Civil War and abolished slavery.

Asked "Which Republican president was better?", 53 percent of Republicans said Trump.

That is in stark contrast to respondents who identify as Democrats and independent. 94 percent of Democrats said Lincoln was the better president, as did 78 percent of independent voters. Overall, 75 percent of poll respondents picked Lincoln compared to 25 percent for Trump.

Other than Republicans, Lincoln was the choice president across all possible polling metrics—preferred by men and women, all age groups and races, as well as based on census region and household income.

The poll results confounded social media users on Friday night, prompting "53% of Republicans" to Trend across Twitter.

Here's more, from our friends over at The Hill:

A majority of Republicans say President Trump is a better leader than former President Lincoln, according to this week’s Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll.

Fifty-three percent of Republicans said Trump was a better president than Lincoln, while 47 percent chose the Civil War-era leader.

Lincoln still overwhelmingly beats Trump among all Americans, 75 percent to 25 percent, with the vast majority of Democrats and independents choosing the former president.

While impeachment and other controversies surrounding Trump continue to dominate headlines, polls have shown the president maintaining a strong approval rating among Republicans.

The Economist/YouGov poll found that 87 percent of those in the GOP either somewhat or strongly approve of the job he’s doing as president.

Trump in the past has boasted of his approval rating within the party, comparing his popularity to Lincoln's.

“You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” Trump said in a July interview with The Sun newspaper in the U.K.

“Beating Lincoln,” Trump added, without clarifying to which poll he was referring. “I beat our Honest Abe.”
