Ok, I admit it….I’m a huge geek!
I was always a big fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation!
It was (and is!) a great show.
Highly underrated.
I’ve found some of the clips on YouTube and I can’t help myself from clicking on them from time to time.
I’ve found a couple things as I look back on the show now.
First, the show still holds up all these years later.
Second, Gene Roddenberry’s vision for the future has a bit too much idealistic socialism in it for me.
But….from time to time they got it right, and the clip below is on example.
Stick with me for a minute and geek out just a bit.
So here’s what happened.
Worf is the Klingon serving aboard the Enterprise and he kills a fellow Klingon in a battle.
It was legal under Klingon law, but Captain Picard is NOT happy!
As I listened to his speech, I couldn’t help but think how this applies to America today.
No, for real.
Below is his speech, with my edits added in the second version as I apply it to America:
Mr. Worf, the Enterprise crew currently includes representatives from 13 planets. They each have their individual beliefs and values and I respect them all. But they have all chosen to serve Starfleet. If anyone cannot perform his or her duty because of the demands of their society, they should resign! Do you want to resign, Mr. Worf?”
Come on!
Is that good or what?
In case you’re still not getting it, think about a group of people that rhymes with “Fuslim” and their body of law that sounds like “Maria Law”.
Get it now?
If not, read this:
Rep. Omar, the United States currently includes people from 200 countries. They each have their individual beliefs and values and I respect them all. But they have all chosen to serve and live in the United States of Amerca. If anyone cannot accept American law because of the demands of their society, they should leave! Do you want to leave, Ms. Omar?”
