A 16-year-old high school basketball player suffered a stroke last week.

Odessa-Montour junior Keyonna Garrison had a blocked vertebral artery and was rushed to Guthrie Corning Hospital.

She was transported to the ICU at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Garrison suffered the stroke on January 5th while in gym class, according to the Star Gazette.

Garrison became ill during gym class Thursday morning. Gina Gavich, Greg’s daughter, noticed her on the gymnasium floor and thought Garrison possibly twisted an ankle. She told her father and Greg immediately went to check on her. He received no response from Garrison as nurses treated her.

According to her GoFundMe page, Garrison will undergo physical therapy to improve her motor skills. There was no impact to her cognitive skills, Greg said.

Gavich and his wife, Tracy, visited Keyonna at Strong on Saturday.

“She’s going to go through a lot of physical therapy,” he added. “You take these little things for granted. Saturday we celebrated she brushed her teeth with her left hand because it was the left side. That was a joyous occasion. For a 16-year-old kid, you never think you’re going to be in that spot. This could be baby steps and one day at a time.”

According to WETM, Garrison has been discharged from the hospital.

Garrison was recently removed from the ICU and is now recovering and is participating in physical therapy to recover motor skills. She has now back home gaining strength and starting the road back to full health.
