Nearly 60 flights were delayed at New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport due to reports of a “suspicious package.”

Newark Airport Terminal C went into lockdown Sunday afternoon.

Rumble footage via Chief Nerd:

Bomb squad reportedly arrived at the scene due to a possible threat and that Terminal C’s Levels 1 & 2 had to be closed to traffic.

Both levels were reopened after the bomb squad got rid of the package.

The incident caused roughly 59 flights to be delayed.

Aviation Source wrote:

With it being the anniversary of 9/11 today as well, this would have been something that the authorities would want to solve and bring under control, which they have done swiftly.

Because of the closure, there is currently congestion on all of the roadways that lead to the airport, with Newark Liberty advising passengers on Twitter to use all levels at the terminals.

Pix 11 noted:

The package was reportedly in a restroom in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport and Level 1 of the terminal was immediately evacuated while officials investigated the scene, according to the Port Authority Police Department.

The item was removed and the airport was cleared at around 1:45 p.m., the PAPD said. However, there are 59 flight delays and the arriving flights are being held until 2:30 p.m.

United Airlines flights inbound to Newark airport are being held at their departure airports due to the incident, according to the FAA.
