One of America’s Largest Chicken Producers Shuts Down Tennessee Plant

George’s Inc.: Poultry and Prepared Foods announced it will close one of its food processing plants.

“George’s is among the top ten largest vertically integrated chicken producers in America, supplying a broad range of quality poultry products,” according to its website.

Officials with George’s Prepared Foods announced they were closing their plant in Caryville, according to Campbell County Mayor, E.L. Morton.

The surprising announcement would leave nearly 200 people jobless, WVLT-TV reports.

Campbell County Mayor E.L. Morton told WVLT that he’s trying to keep the plant open.

“I have contacted the Tennessee Economic and Community Development staff to request assistance in keeping the plant open or facilitating a sale to another operator,” Morton said.

“I have requested Governor Lee’s assistance as well. My primary concern is for the welfare of the dedicated workers who have been the backbone of this operation. Our prayers go out to them as well as our very best efforts to keep them employed in Campbell County.”

Senior Vice President of George’s Food, Robert George, released the following statement about the decision to close the plant:

“Assuring the long-term strength of George’s requires us to carefully consider how our individual business units are performing and to understand their growth potential. It is a challenging time to be in the prepared foods business, and we have been carefully evaluating how we navigate the volatility in beef and pork markets.

We have made the difficult, but necessary, decision to discontinue production at the Campos Foods plant in Caryville, Tennessee, effective September 2, 2022. We have notified the plant community, our customers and team members who are affected by this change.

Caring for our team is a value we firmly hold, and we will work closely with our impacted team members in Caryville to support them as we transition. It is important to know we considered all possible options before coming to this conclusion, and while it is disappointing, it is the appropriate long-term path for our business.

George’s will continue to focus on producing high-quality poultry products and creating a strong and stable future for our business and for those we serve.”

Last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that George’s Inc. plant in Edinburg, Virginia was out of compliance with federal regulations after more than 2,500 chickens were found dead on the plant grounds, The Northern Virginia Daily reported.

A majority of the dead chickens had been left in trailers overnight May 6, 2020, at the George’s Inc. plant in Edinburg, according to the reports. Some of the dead chickens were on trailers that arrived at the plant the morning of May 7, the reports state.

When USDA inspection personnel reviewed information on May 7, 1,785 chickens and 740 heads were found “dead on arrival,” the reports show.

George’s Inc. is a chicken processing company with two plants in Virginia — Harrisonburg is the other — as well as plants in Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee. The corporate offices are in Springdale, Arkansas.

The company offers whole chickens, chicken breasts, frozen chicken and more as retail products throughout the country, according to its website, georgesfarms.com. George’s Inc. products are sold at Sam’s Clubs in Sterling, Woodbridge and Charlottesville, according to the website.

Chickens that die from causes other than slaughter are considered to be unfit for human food and must be condemned, a spokesperson with the USDA Field Safety and Inspection Service said recently. Birds that are condemned must be disposed of by either steam treatment, incineration or chemical denaturing, USDA regulations state.

The plant disposes of carcasses in accordance to regulations, the USDA spokesperson said.
