GOP Demands Probe Into Leaked Supreme Court Draft

The FBI is currently trying to find out who leakedĀ  Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion regarding overturning Roe v. Wade.

The leak of the highly confidential document has the Supreme Court in complete disbelief and the trust amongst the Justices and staffers has hit an all-time low.

Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn was quoted saying “This is an attack on the court. This is someone whoā€™s done something that is unprecedented. They decided to leak thisā€.

The FBI is reportedly working all night and day to find out who leaked the documents to the left-leaning publication Politico.

NBC News added these details:

Republican lawmakers are demanding a federal investigation into who leaked an apparent draft of a majority opinion showing that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that has protected a womanā€™s right to an abortion for the past half century.

The leak of the 98-page document ā€” an extraordinary occurrence for the highly guarded institution ā€” has rocked Washington and infuriated conservatives who said the breach was designed to intimidate the court and called for the person responsible to be caught and prosecuted.

ā€œThis is an attack on the court. This is someone whoā€™s done something that is unprecedented. They decided to leak this,ā€ Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., a member of the Judiciary Committee, told reporters Tuesday.

She said she’s certain Chief Justice John Roberts and the FBI “have worked all night long trying to find out who did this, and I have no doubt that the justices were assembled early this morning to come together and address this.ā€

Reuters added these details:

U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday said the Supreme Court will investigate the leak of a draft decision indicating that a majority of the nine justices are set to overturn the constitutional right to abortion, a breach of the court’s trust that he called a “betrayal.”

In a news release, the court confirmed that the document is authentic but cautioned that the draft opinion, dated from February – which would overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide – does not represent the “final position of any member on the issues in the case.”

Roberts directed the court’s marshal to launch an investigation into the source of the leak.

“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed. The work of the court will not be affected in any way,” Roberts said.
