On April 5, DirecTV dropped One America News Network (OANN).
Why?
OANN was charged by mainstream media as being a right-wing extremist outlet where commentators peddled conspiracies about a Russian hoax, hydroxychloroquine, election fraud and Dominion’s vulnerable voting machines, Hunter’s laptop, and other “outlandish” claims that are now … proven true.
OANN was content many Americans turned to when Fox affirmed Biden’s results.
And OANN was seen as an extension of President Trump’s voice to the nation. He tweeted their content over 100 times and called on them favorably during press conferences.
For those indiscretions OANN had to be punished. Silenced.
The takedown started with a hit piece by Reuters in October 2021 titled, “How AT&T Helped Build Far Right One America News”. The article paints OANN, Trump, and his supporters as lunatics. For example, Reuters stated:
Hope everybody is watching @OANN right now,” Trump tweeted on December 1, citing a dubious report about a truck carrying more than 100,000 fake ballots. “Other media afraid to show.” … America’s post-election turmoil, punctuated by the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, continues to roil the country. Dozens of election administrators in battleground states Trump lost have received a barrage of death threats…. A Reuters poll in May showed that a quarter of Americans – and 53% of Republicans – wrongly believe Trump won the 2020 election. OAN caters to this audience.” … Herring [the owner of OANN] suggested the riot might be a false-flag operation by the leftwing Antifa movement. “We want to report all the things Antifa did yesterday. I don’t think it was Trump people but lets investigate,” he emailed OAN producers. The Federal Bureau of Investigation says there is no evidence of Antifa involvement in the riot. All but a handful of the some 600 suspects charged so far have been rightwing Trump backers.”
And on it goes.
The overarching message of the Reuters article is that OANN caters to fringe extremists and AT&T backed them. AT&T, the majority owner of DirecTV, is accused of financially subsidizing OANN, a claim it denied. But that was enough to turn the cancel culture machine on attack mode.
DirecTV buckled to the pressure.
Reuters gleefully announced in January 2022 that DirecTV planned to drop OANN, stating the move “could financially cripple the rightwing TV network known for fueling conspiracy theories about the 2020 election”.
Other outlets piled on and gloated over the financial strain OANN was put under, with the Daily Beast, for example, telling its readers OAN is in existential crisis caused by the mass exodus of talent “since it was announced that DirecTV would drop the far-right channel from the airwaves.”
The left is all for diversity unless it’s diversity of political thought and debate.

DirecTV has 160+ channels. The left couldn’t let OANN be one.
It should be no surprise that AT&T/DirecTV banished conservative voices.
Senator Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter to AT&T questioning its conflict of interest in the OANN debacle. As quoted by TheFederalist, Grassley laid out the conflict in six bullet points:
- One America News Network (‘OANN’) is being sued for alleged defamation by Dominion Voting Systems.
- Dominion Voting Systems is owned by Staple Street Capital.
- William Kennard is on the executive board of Staple Street Capital.
- William Kennard is also the Chairman of AT&T’s board of directors.
- AT&T owns 70% of DirecTV, and controls two seats on DirecTV’s board of directors.
- DirecTV has decided not to renew its contract with OANN.
Conservatives need to stop giving money to massive media corporations that despise us or have vested interests in distorting the truth.
