3-D Suicide Pods Are Now Legal In Switzerland

These pods look futuristic yet completely evil at the same time.

Switzerland’s medical review board have legalized portable 3-d printed suicide pods.

Assisted suicides have been legal in Switzerland since 1942 and now with the new pods that are easy to operate many believe the number of assisted suicide are set to rise.

The new pods are operated by the person who is inside of the pod’s chamber and ultimately kills the person by reducing their oxygen levels.

Portable ‘suicide capsules’ that can be made with a 3D printer and transported to ‘idyllic’ locations to be used by people wanting to end their life have been legalised in Switzerland.

The country’s medical review board has given the green light for use of the coffin-like devices, named Sarco Suicide Pods, which have been designed for use in assisted suicide and can be operated by users inside.

Assisted suicide with unselfish motives has been legal in Switzerland since 1942, with around 1,300 people using the services of euthanasia organisations in 2020 alone.

The new Sarco pods, short for sarcophagus, have been developed by Exit International, a non-profit firm that has advocated for the legalisation of voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.

‘The machine can be towed anywhere for the death. It can be in an idyllic outdoor setting or in the premises of an assisted-suicide organization, for example.’

The biodegradable capsule can also detach from the base in order to serve as a coffin.

The current method for assisted suicide in Switzerland is ingesting a capsule that sends a person into a deep coma before they die.

However, the new Sarco pods can be operated from the inside by its user and work by reducing internal oxygen levels.

Assisted suicide is legal in some countries under certain circumstances, including in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Canada and Switzerland. Most countries where assisted suicide is legal require people to have an incurable or terminal illness.

The Sarco machine has been developed by international nonprofit organization Exit International, which advocates for voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.

“The person will get into the capsule and lie down. It’s very comfortable. They will be asked a number of questions and when they have answered, they may press the button inside the capsule activating the mechanism in their own time,” Nitschke told Swiss Info in an interview.

Nitschke explained the pod will then start the process of flooding the inside with nitrogen, which will reduce the oxygen level from 21 percent to 1 percent. He said the person will feel disoriented and slightly euphoric before losing consciousness.

“The whole thing takes about 30 seconds. Death takes place through hypoxia and hypocapnia, oxygen and carbon dioxide deprivation, respectively. There is no panic, no choking feeling,” he told the news outlet.
