Texas Grand Jury Indicts Netflix Over “Cuties” Film

Finally there’s some legal pushback Netflix for their “Cuties” film!

In case if you aren’t familiar, “Cuties” is a Netflix movie that caused a lot of controversy for its sexual portrayal of 11-year-old girls.

The movie depicts them in scantily clad clothes, gyrating and doing all sorts of disturbing dance moves in front of adults.

And a grand jury from the good old state of Texas has indicted Netflix for potentially distributing material that sexualizes minors.

Fox News has the details on the story:

Netflix has been indicted on a criminal charge that alleges the streaming giant promotes “lewd visual material” of a child.

The lawsuit centers on the release of the French film “Cuties” that has been mired by controversy since its release last month.

A Tyler County, Texas grand jury moved to return an indictment against Netflix on Sept. 23, Fox News confirmed on Tuesday via court documents.

The complaint alleges Netflix “knowingly” promoted visual material which “depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”

Netflix has previously defended the film in statements to Fox News, calling the project “a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up.”

The media giant doubled down on Tuesday. “Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a spokesperson for Netflix told Fox News. “This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”

The movie truly is disturbing.

It’s completely inappopriate and disgusting to have young girls performing sexual dances.

That’s something we should all be able to agree on!

Noticeabley, it's been Republicans who have had to take on Netflix over their poor choice to publish the film.

Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee have been at the forefront of this.

And Senator Mike Lee says he's completely unsatisfied with how Netflix has responded so far.

Here's more on that from USA Today:

Lee joined U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex, and four state attorneys general, all Republicans, in publicly criticizing the film.

In Monday's announcement, Lee said in addition to his letter, he discussed his concerns in more detail with Netflix employees by phone. "I have to say that I am unsatisfied by Netflix’s response," he said in the statement.

“Asked whether the sexualization of young girls depicted in Cuties constituted criminal conduct, Netflix offered only conclusory statements in denial," the statement continued.

Lee felt perplexed as to how Netflix could  "condemn the conduct depicted in Cuties, while celebrating the film and filmmakers who asked several underage girls to stand in front of a camera and engage in that same 'inappropriate, shameful' conduct for all the world to see."

“I reiterate my call for Netflix to cease distributing Cuties. Until it does so, Netflix lacks the moral standing to speak to any cultural issue,” he concluded.

Many have called out Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and the Obamas for their silence on the film.

They have no problem voicing their criticism of President Trump, but when it comes to the sexualization of children, they don't seem to care!

Because their raking in millions of dollars from their deals with Netflix.

Check out more on that from Daily Mail:

Harry and Meghan signed a deal thought to be worth $150 million with the network earlier this year. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have never produced a TV show, will make documentaries, films, scripted and kids’ programs.

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama announced in 2018 they had entered a multi-year producing partnership with the online streaming service.

Neither couple has spoken about the controversial movie as of Sunday. And that has sparked criticism online.

Twitter user @AngelaLMorabito said: 'The Obamas and Prince Harry & Meghan have contracts with Netflix. If they really want to use their influence for good, they’ll tell Netflix to drop “Cuties.”'

@DTCahill added: 'Silence from @Netflix employees Michelle, Barack, Megan [sic] and Harry on Cuties.'

Last month former Suits actress Meghan told voters: 'If we aren't part of the solution, we are part of the problem.

'If you aren't going out there and voting you are complicit. If you are complacent, you are complicit.'

Reacting to her silence on Cuties @WhisperOfSpirit said: 'Meghan & Harry have yet to speak against Netflix’s streaming of Cuties. To quote them: “If you’re complacent, you’re complicit.”

'If dish-soap was enough to irk Meghan, then why hasn’t this?! Come on Meghan & Harry; it’s time to “unlock action and inspire hope” We’re waiting...'

@spotterdotter added: 'One would expect Harry and Meghan having done their research before signing a deal with Netflix, the company who produced and aired the film “Cuties” - which is basically child pornography.

'But it seems to be all about the money with these 2. Where is Markle the feminist? Gone?'

@1ramona7 said: 'Susan Rice, Obama's, Harry & Megan....Getting cosy at Netflix but why no comment at all on #Cuties. Would have thought you'd feel the need to say something guys, you like to speak out so much when it suits.'

Rightfully so, many parents are extremely disappointed with Netflix over the release of the film:
