CBS Austin had this to say about the poll results:
AUSTIN, Texas — As another sign of a close race in Texas, a new poll shows President Donald Trump leading former Vice President Joe Biden in Texas, the first lead for the Republican incumbent in a month of polling.
The poll, conducted by Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, has President Trump with a 7 point lead, 47.5% to 40.5%, over Biden.
The poll surveyed 846 Texas voters from Augusts 4th through 13th.
Last month, polls from Morning Consult Political Intelligence and Quinnapiac University had Biden with a narrow lead over Trump in Texas.
Two other candidates, Libertarian Jo Jorgensen and Green party Howard Hawkins, polled at 1.1% and 0.8% in Texas respectively.
Trump also has a slight lead in “strength of vote choice,” with 79.2% or people voting for the incumbent saying they aren’t going to change their mind versus 77.1% for Biden.
Meanwhile Trump commands the white vote in Texas with 62%, but Biden leads with Hispanics at 47.4% and Blacks at 82.3%.
Dallas News had this to say about President Trump leading the polls in Texas:
AUSTIN — A new poll by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation shows that Hispanic voters in the state prefer presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden over President Donald Trump by nearly 10% — but Texas’ overall electorate still prefers Trump.
In the poll released Monday, Trump, a Republican, leads Biden by 7% among registered voters and by 5.4% among the state’s most likely voters. That’s despite Biden’s 9.5% advantage among Hispanic voters.
The poll, the first major research done by the foundation alongside Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, surveyed 846 registered Texas voters online and was conducted between Aug. 4-13. The poll was done by the online survey company YouGov with a Hispanic oversample and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. It was sponsored by The Dallas Morning News.
The results show that despite Trump’s unpopularity with Hispanic voters, Biden’s campaign has not made sufficient inroads with that community — a major constituency for Democrats in Texas — to exploit the president’s vulnerability at the top of the ticket.
“Despite Biden’s nearly 10% lead, neither presidential candidate has yet to completely lock down the Texas Hispanic vote,” Jason Villalba, a former Republican state lawmaker who is the founder and president of the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation, said in a statement. “For a presidential candidate to compete in Texas, clearly, Hispanics are the key constituency.”
Leticia Van de Putte, a former Democratic state senator and a board member at the foundation, said the poll shows campaigns need to devote more time and outreach to Hispanics.
Texas is a must-win for Trump if he doesn’t clinch the state of Texas then it’s all over.
There shouldn’t be too many worries though the last time Texas went blue was in 1980.
