Trump to Skip Pelosi’s St. Patrick’s Day Lunch, Says She’s “Torn This Nation Apart”

Trump's decision to skip Pelosi's lunch is a major snub, because it is the first time since 2003 that a president will not attend.

When the president has not attended the luncheon, the vice president has filled in.

However, Vice President Pence will not be attending the Congressional St. Patrick's Day lunch either.

The Daily Mail has more details on the President's decision:

White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said that it was Pelosi's actions that rendered the decision.

'Since the Speaker has chosen to tear this Nation apart with her actions and her rhetoric, the President will not participate in moments where she so often chooses to drive discord and disunity, and will instead celebrate the rich history and strong ties between the United States and Ireland at the White House on March 12. The relationship between our two countries has never been stronger, and the President looks forward to welcoming the Prime Minister of Ireland for the annual Shamrock Bowl presentation,' Deere said in a statement.

Pelosi's controversial ripping up the text of Trump's State of the Union Address sparked fury from the White House.

Relations between the two heads of the executive and legislative branches of government have been tense for months and grown colder since the speaker launched the impeachment inquiry in September. The Senate voted last month to acquit the president on the two articles against him.

Trump attended last year's luncheon, but neither he or Pence will be at this year's lunch.

The move is seen as an obvious slam and snub of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who pushed a political impeachment hoax despite a lack of bipartisan support.

The taoiseach of Irseland, Leo Varadkar, is traveling to D.C. to attend the lunch.

It is being reported, however, that Trump will meet with Varadkar in the White House and that the two will attend the Shamrock Bowl presentation together.

Speaker Pelosi, hear this loud and clear: actions have consequences!

Many in the media are claiming that this is a bipartisan event.

Pelosi's office even issued a statement, claiming that they wished the president would "put politics aside" to attend the event.

However, Pelosi has a habit and history of turning the luncheon into a political event.

At last year's St. Patrick's day luncheon, she jabbed and insulted President Trump.

Specifically, she used the luncheon to needle Trump on immigration and attend to bully him to backing down on the issue.

The annual lunch on Capitol Hill takes place around St. Patrick’s Day in addition to a White House meeting with the Prime Minister of Ireland and a White House reception where the Taoiseach traditionally gives the president a bowl of shamrocks.

The Congressional luncheon is an ongoing tradition started by House Speaker Tip O’Neill in 1983, who invited President Ronald Reagan to Capitol Hill for the occasion.

But the relationship between Trump and Pelosi has deteriorated, particularly after she ripped up the president’s speech at his 2020 State of the Union address.

She also removed the words “high privilege” and “distinct honor” for the traditional introduction of the president at Congress at the beginning of his speech.

At last year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Pelosi needled Trump on immigration at the reception by pointedly quoting former President Ronald Reagan and O’Neill on the issue.

We hope Trump chooses to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in a way that cherishes our friendship with Ireland, rather than the political infighting that Pelosi appears ready to continue.

One thing is for certain: Without Trump, the luncheon will certainly lose some excitement and energy!
