Ted Cruz Rips FBI’s Russia Investigation: “This Wasn’t Jason Bourne – This Was Beavis and Butthead”

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz blasted the FBI for their Trump-Russia collusion investigation (and the Obama administration for their total lack of oversight in FBI surveillance of the Trump 2016 campaign) with a hilariously true one-liner during the Horowitz testimony hearing today.

“What was going on here – this wasn’t Jason Bourne, this was Beavis and Butthead!”

Prior to drawing the apt comparison, Cruz had said,

“I can tell you from my time at the Department of Justice and from my time in law enforcement, any responsible leader when hearing that you’re talking about sending in spies and sending in a wiretap on any presidential nominee should say, ‘What in the hell are we doing?’ And by the way, the people up the chain who are saying ‘We didn’t know,’ if you had responsible leadership, there’s no more important decision than you make.”

“I can tell you, when I was at DOJ, if someone said let’s tap Hillary Clinton or let’s tap Bill Clinton or John Kerry, the people there would have said, ‘What in the hell are you talking about?’ What was going on here?”

Fox News has more to say:

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, let it be known Wednesday that he isn't impressed with the FBI’s and the Department of Justice’s handling of the Trump-Russia investigation -- saying those involved were hardly the type of skillful agents found in an action thriller movie.

“What was going on here -- this wasn’t Jason Bourne, this was Beavis and Butt-Head,” Cruz said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Cruz’s pop culture reference was only the highlight of a lengthy tirade where he bashed the conduct of some FBI agents and Justice Department (DOJ) employees during the Trump-Russia probe.

The hearing, which featured the testimony of DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, came two days after a report identified significant problems with applications to receive and renew warrants to eavesdrop on a former Trump campaign aide in 2016 and 2017.

Cruz called the report a "stunning indictment of the FBI and the Department of Justice, of a pattern of abusive power." He also said the facts in the report "should be deeply chilling" to anyone who understands them and that the errors made "are grotesque abuses of power."

The Washington Examiner also said:

Sen. Ted Cruz mocked the Justice Department's and FBI’s conduct during the Trump-Russia investigation, describing it as being more of an animated sitcom about incompetent teenagers than a spy thriller.

The Texas Republican, who has a penchant for making popular culture references, harped on responsible leadership during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with the Justice Department watchdog, who released a report this week on the FBI's effort to monitor members of President Trump's 2016 campaign.

“I can tell you from my time at the Department of Justice and from my time in law enforcement, any responsible leader when hearing that you’re talking about sending in spies and sending in a wiretap on any presidential nominee should say, ‘What in the hell are we doing?'” Cruz said. “And by the way, the people up the chain who are saying ‘We didn’t know,’ if you had responsible leadership, there’s no more important decision than you make."
