Sometimes I wonder if the Republican party is learning from Trump.
I would sure hope so.
It looks like maybe Mitch McConnnell is, because he just landed a checkmate move against Ocasio-Cortez and the other Dems who were backing the infamous Green New Deal.
After the Dems rolled out their program with great pride, it was widely ridiculed by most, especially online.
Even President Trump mocked them at his El Paso MAGA Rally for trying to protect “farting cows” and for wanting to eliminate air travel.
To quote Trump: “I don’t think the Hawaiian Senator has quite figured out that you can’t take a train to Hawaii, but she’ll figure it out after a while.”
Hilarious. Classic Trump.
Seizing on the wide-spread ridicule of the Green New Deal, McConnell just boxed the Dems into a corner by calling for a vote on the Senate Floor.
His position?
If you like it so much, put your name behind it!
The brilliant move have given Dems a choice between two bad options: (1) attach their name to the bad legislation and tarnish their image, or (2) abandon their fellow Dems in a proverbial throwing under the bus.
Take a look:
The National Review had more:
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday that the Senate will vote on the Green New Deal resolution introduced last week by a coalition of progressive lawmakers vowing to eliminate all greenhouse-gas emissions within ten years, while simultaneously creating millions of jobs in a government-subsidized green-energy sector.
“I’ve noted with great interest the Green New Deal. And we’re going to be voting on that in the Senate. Give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal,” McConnell said with a sly smile during a Tuesday press conference.
The resolution, which was introduced by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Senator Ed Markey (D., Mass.) on Friday, provides a sweeping list of climate-change- and social-justice-related measures including the refurbishing of every structure in the country with renewable-energy technology and the creation of millions of federally funded jobs in the green-energy sector.
A “frequently asked questions” document that accompanied the resolution referenced the complete elimination of air travel and farting cows. Ocasio-Cortez has since disavowed the FAQ, which was posted on her website, and suggested her political enemies disseminated the document to sabotage the proposal.
McConnell and Trump are reportedly united in their desire to tie Democrats to the bill’s socialist policy framework ahead of the 2020 elections — an endeavor that should prove simple since virtually the entire 2020 Democratic presidential field endorsed it as soon as it was introduced.
The Dems immediately and hilariously cried foul.
From Fox News:
One of the co-authors of the Green New Deal is slamming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for announcing he’s bringing the resolution to a vote.
Last week, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., introduced a sprawling blueprint of an environmental and economic overhaul that has gotten the support of numerous Democrats, including most of the candidates who have announced 2020 presidential runs.
However, after McConnell told the press that he would bring the Green New Deal to a vote, Markey took to Twitter to slam the decision.
