While attending a Black Lives Matter sponsored “Count Every Vote” protest at Capitol Hill on Tuesday, first-term Democrat Senator Nikema Williams of Atlanta, Georgia, was arrested by Capitol Police.
The protesters were ordered to disperse after being warned by authorities against breaking rules regarding chanting while lawmakers were in session, eventually leading to Williams’ arrest, which the Atlanta Senator disputed.
“I was not yelling, I was not chanting,” said Senator Williams during the incident, which was captured on video. “I stood peacefully next to my constituents, because they wanted their voices to be heard, and now I’m being arrested.”
