Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has repeatedly stood up against so-called “woke” organizations throughout his time in office — and his latest target is the National Hockey League.
After the NHL posted an ad for a recruiting event in the state that is open to everyone except able-bodied white men, the governor’s office sounded off.
Here’s what the Daily Wire reported:
“Discrimination of any sort is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic,” DeSantis’ office said in a statement. “We are fighting all discrimination in our schools and our workplaces, and we will fight it in publicly accessible places of meeting or activity.”
“We call upon the National Hockey League to immediately remove and denounce the discriminatory prohibitions it has imposed on attendance to the 2023 ‘Pathway to Hockey’ summit,” the statement continued.
While it might be true that white men make up most of the NHL, there’s no push to stop recruiting minorities from the NBA, NFL, and other leagues where they are disproportionately represented.
As you might imagine, news of this racist, sexist job posting got people talking on social media.

The backlash was apparently enough to convince the league to reconsider.
As Post Millennial reported:
The National Hockey League has opened up their “Pathway to Hockey Summit” to anyone over 18 years of age after the office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis put the organization on notice for discrimination by originally limiting their summit only to people who “identify as female, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability.”
Of course, it’s anybody’s guess as to whether the white males who sign up will actually get a fair shake.
The NHL has been preoccupied with identity politics for a while now.
