Banned Twitter Accounts Won’t be Restored Before Midterms, ‘At Least a Few More Weeks’

“Elon Musk said early Wednesday that Twitter would not reinstate banned accounts to the platform for ‘at least a few more weeks’ as the company figures out its ‘election integrity’ policies ahead of the midterm elections,” Politico reports.

“Twitter will not allow anyone who was de-platformed for violating Twitter rules back on platform until we have a clear process for doing so, which will take at least a few more weeks,” Musk tweeted.

“Twitter’s content moderation council will include representatives with widely divergent views, which will certainly include the civil rights community and groups who face hate-fueled violence,” Musk added.

Cont. from Politico:

Since taking ownership of the company, Musk has fired Twitter’s board of directors and made himself the sole director. He now has complete control over the company and can make decisions about the platform without board approval, an arrangement he has said is “temporary.”

Musk’s tweet signals that former President Donald Trump and other banned accounts will not return to the platform before the midterm elections on Nov. 8. Musk provided the update in reply to a tweet from Yoel Roth, Twitter’s head of safety and integrity, who said the platform is “staying vigilant against attempts to manipulate conversations” about the midterms.

Musk said he has spoken with civil society leaders — including executives at the Anti-Defamation League, Free Press and the NAACP — about “how Twitter will continue to combat hate & harassment & enforce its election integrity policies.” The content moderation council that Musk is organizing “will include representatives with widely divergent views, which will certainly include the civil rights community and groups who face hate-fueled violence,” he said.

Tech Xplore added:

Twitter users have been watching closely to see whether Musk will reinstate Trump, banned for inciting last year’s attack on the Capitol by a mob seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and other deplatformed users.

The potential reinstatement of such accounts banned for violating the site’s content moderation rules has been seen as a bellwether of where Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” wants to take the site he describes as a global town square.

But on Wednesday the South African billionaire said the wait will have to continue a little longer.

President Trump stated last week he would remain on Truth Social and declined to comment if he would ever use Twitter again.

Per Fox Business:

Former President Donald Trump wished Elon Musk the best with Twitter but stressed he will stay on his own Truth Social, a social media platform he touts as “better,” “safe” and that feels “like home.”

Musk on Thursday completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, tweeting before midnight that “the bird is freed” and updating his bio to designate himself as the “Chief Twit.”

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital on Friday, Trump said, “I like Elon and I wish him a lot of luck. I hope he does well with it.”

However, Trump added, “I don’t think Twitter can be successful without me.” Should Musk lift Trump’s lifetime ban on Twitter, the former president’s account would technically be active. Trump declined to comment on if he would ever use it again.

Musk has suggested that he would loosen content moderation practices for Twitter and would eliminate lifetime bans from the platform, but Trump told Fox News Digital that the new policy will not affect how he uses social media.

“I am staying on Truth. I like it better, I like the way it works, I like Elon, but I’m staying on Truth,” he told Fox News Digital.
