Canada Officially Freezes all Handgun Sales and Purchases

Americans need to take note of what’s happening up in Canada right now.

The Canadian government has officially put a freeze on the buying or selling of all handguns in the country.

Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Public Safety Minister, broke the news on Twitter:

“It is now illegal to buy, sell or transfer a handgun anywhere in Canada.”

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, wasn’t far behind with his own announcement.

The legislation was first introduced back in May of this year.

Trudeau infamously said then, “We are capping the market for handguns.”

Interestingly, people who already own handguns can still sell or transfer them to “exempted individuals or businesses.”

Oh, how kind of the Canadian government…

I wonder who falls under the exempt clause…

The Toronto Sun has more on the handgun freeze, which became official on Friday:

Measures to freeze the number of handguns in Canada took effect on Friday, the federal public safety minister announced in a social media post.

“Canada’s national handgun freeze takes effect today!” Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino wrote on Twitter. “It is now illegal to buy, sell or transfer a handgun anywhere in Canada.”

Trudeau proudly bragged about the announcement on Twitter:

CBC shared more details on the federal government’s ruling:

Under the regulations, people can still own and use their registered handguns and sell or transfer handguns to “exempted individuals or businesses.”

Requests to transfer a handgun submitted before today’s date will still be processed, the government said.

Authorized businesses can continue to import and sell handguns to other eligible businesses (like museums and the movie industry, among others), law enforcement, defence personnel and other exempted individuals.

According to the government, exempted individuals include anyone who already holds an authorization to carry handguns — which requires permission from the Canadian Firearms Program of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police — and people who train, compete or coach in a handgun shooting discipline that is a program of the International Olympic Committee or the International Paralympic Committee.

Everyone else won’t be able to legally buy a handgun after Friday.

It’s interesting to see that “authorized businesses” are still allowed to import and sell to other such entities.

What’s more interesting is who falls under the category of being an “eligible business:”

law enforcement, Museums, and the movie industry…

If this were America, I’m sure Alec Baldwin would be happy with that decision…
