California Plans To BAN Gasoline Cars By 2035

California’s liberal utopia is about to get even more radical.

California air regulators are proposing a new rule that will ban the sale of new gasoline cars in the state by 2035.

On Thursday afternoon regulators will place a vote and according to those familiar with the matter, it’s expected to pass easily.

California isn’t the only state that is expected to ban the sale of gasoline cars but Washington state already has placed a new rule that will ban the sales of gas cars in the future.

CNN had more details on California’s plan:

California air regulators are expected Thursday to issue stringent rules to ban the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035 and set interim targets to phase the cars out.

The California Air Resources Board will vote on the measure Thursday afternoon, board member Daniel Sperling told CNN.

Sperling added he was “99.9%” confident the measure would pass. If it does, it would be one of the first such bans worldwide. It also could have major implications for the US car market, given how large California’s economy is.
“This is monumental,” Sperling said. “This is the most important thing that CARB has done in the last 30 years. It’s important not just for California, but it’s important for the country and the world.”

The board’s new rules also would set interim quotas for zero-emission vehicles, focusing on new models. Starting with 2026 models, 35% of new cars, SUVs and small pickups sold in California would be required to be zero-emission vehicles. That quota would increase each year, expected to reach 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The quotas also would allow 20% of zero-emission cars sold to be plug-in hybrids.

California’s air regulator is poised to require all new cars sold in the state by 2035 to have zero emissions — a sweeping rule that could pave the way for other states to adopt the requirement, transforming the nation’s auto market.

The ban on new gas-powered vehicle sales — first announced by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom nearly two years ago — would also require automakers to make sure that 35 percent of all new passenger cars sold by 2026 have no emissions, a threshold that would increase to 68 percent by 2030. About 16 percent of new cars sold in California so far this year have zero emissions, significantly higher than the national average of 6 percent.

“This regulation is one of the most important efforts we have ever carried out to clean the air,” Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board, told reporters on Wednesday.
