Finland has just made a decision that will upset the apple cart.

In a monumental decision, Finland’s government decided to start the application process for NATO.

Finland previously was a neutral country for decades but now with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war that has changed.

Putin previously stated that if Finland joins NATO and ditches their neutrality then it would be a big mistake.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister also went on record saying “Moscow will not simply accept the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO”.

Putin made an official announcement too:

Fox News shared these details:

Top leadership in Finland announced the previously neutral Nordic country wants to join NATO as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues.

“This is a historic day. A new era begins,” Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said Sunday. Niinisto made the announcement at a joint news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki with Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

Finland shares a border with Russia and the announcement comes as top NATO diplomats are meeting Sunday in Berlin to discuss providing further support to Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Finland Saturday that relations between the two neighbors could be “negatively affected” if Niinisto follows through on the plan to apply for NATO membership.

Now Sweden is now also looking to join JANTO

ABC 10 News had more details regarding Sweden asking to join NATO.

A second Scandinavian nation has requested to join NATO, the 30-nation military alliance that is opposed by Russia.

Sweden joins Finland to formally request to join the alliance. Membership in the alliance comes with a stipulation of providing military assistance if a member is attacked.

The move of adding Sweden and Findland could further upset the Kremlin, which has sought to weaken the NATO alliance.

The moves by Sweden and Finland come after Russia invaded Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO. Had Ukraine been a member of NATO, other nations in the alliance would have been obligated to provide defense for the nation.
