The violence and lawlessness continue in New York City.
Two police officers — Wilbert Mora, age 27, and Jason Rivera, only 22 years old — were shot when responding to a domestic violence call. Officer Mora was critically wounded and remains hospitalized at Harlem Hospital. At the same hospital, Officer Mora succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Tonight, we mourn the loss of a hero officer — a son, husband, and friend. Only 22 years old, Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty. We vow to #NeverForget Jason as his fellow Finest vow to honor his tremendous legacy of service & the ultimate sacrifice. pic.twitter.com/5zsx45XiM4

The NYPD dispatch logs show that the police were called from a woman who was having a dispute with her son, Lashawn McNeil. When three police officers arrived, the mother told them she wasn’t injured, and no weapons were involved. As the officers approached a bedroom where the mother said Lashawn was hiding, he kicked open the door and opened fire, striking Mora and Rivera before the third unnamed officer returned fire. Lashawn was struck in the head and arm and remains in critical condition.
Keechant Sewell, the police commissioner appointed by Mayor Eric Adams, said in a news conference that she’s “struggling to find the words to express the tragedy” that unfolded. “We’re mourning, and we’re angry,” she added.
Mayor Adams spoke at the news conference with authority. “This was just not an attack on three brave officers,” he said. “This was an attack on the City of New York” and “an attack on the children and families of this city.”
The shooting highlights the challenges Eric Adams faces as New York’s newly appointed Mayor. Just last week, a man pushed Michelle Go, a 40-year-old woman, onto the tracks of an incoming train which killed her. Only two days ago, on January 20th, an 11-month-old infant was killed in the Bronx when a stray bullet struck her in the head.
An 11-month-old baby shot in the Bronx. If that’s not a wake up call, I don’t know what is. It should be unimaginable that this would happen in our city.
But it did.
Leaders at every level have abandoned city streets. I won’t.
I refuse to surrender New York City to violence. pic.twitter.com/uHFOi4Ixvh

The killing of Officer Rivera marks the city’s third public tragedy in just over a single week. Of course, the marxist Democratic Party will never let a tragedy go to waste. Calls for gun control have been renewed, and Mayor Eric Adams can’t help himself from getting on the bandwagon:
We are all witnesses. To gun violence. To these murders. To the failures of leaders who have allowed these killers to get ahold of guns.
We won’t allow violence to divide our city. It will unite us — being united is the only way we can save our city.
— Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) January 22, 2022
There are no gun manufacturers in our city. How are we removing thousands of guns off our streets and somehow they still find their way into the hands of killers?
We need Washington to act now to stop the flow of weapons into our cities.
— Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) January 22, 2022
Someone should tell Eric Adams that gun manufacturers weren’t present when Mayors Rudy Giuliani or Michael Bloomberg took the reins of a city that didn’t catch and release criminals in the name of “bail reform”. The anti-gun nonsense is a sideshow. Most of the big cities run by Democrats like New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles are drowning in the violent crime that Democratic policies allow to thrive. Calling on Washington to “limit the flow of guns into our cities” will only hurt the law-abiding gun owner as more and more restrictions choke his or her right to bear arms and defend themself.
Leading up to his election, Eric Adams promised to be tough on crime. It gave hope to millions of Americans who saw the nation’s cities descend into chaos after the George Floyd riots, cities that still suffer from leadership that is willingly blind to the criminal spirit that grips them. Until real law enforcement is seen on the urban streets of America, Mayor Adams is just another Democrat who will tow the Party line and maintain the far-left status quo while innocent people are allowed to be terrorized in the name of “progress”.
