Giuliani’s pressuring of Ukrainian officials to announce investigations into unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing by then-candidate Biden and his family ahead of the 2020 election played a crucial role in Trump’s first impeachment on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

FBI agents also executed a search warrant at the D.C.-area home of Victoria Toensing, a former federal prosecutor and wife to ex-U.S. Attorney Joe DiGenova, both of whom are close to Giuliani and have had dealings with Ukrainians who have sought damaging information about the Bidens.

Federal authorities have keyed in on Giuliani, focusing on whether he illegally lobbied the previous administration in 2019 on behalf of Ukrainian officials and oligarchs while searching for damaging information on Trump's political rivals, including Biden, who was by that point the leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The former New York City mayor's son, Andrew Giuliani, who is considering a run for New York governor, described the execution of the warrant as the "continued politicization of the Justice Department."
