Video Shows Knife Wielding Man Fatally Shot After Charging Cop Pleading With Him to Stop

I can’t figure out if this is frightening, stupid, creepy, sad, or all of the above.

Bodycam footage showed a man armed with two butcher knives charging a Nashville police officer early Saturday morning during a traffic stop before being fatally shot.

Four-year-veteran Officer Christopher Royle was patrolling in Nashville, Tennessee around midnight when he ran the plates of a Mercedes sedan and noticed the plates were registered to another vehicle, police spokesman Dan Aaron said at a press conference Saturday.

Royle conducted a vehicle stop to inquire about the license plate issue, the spokesman told reporters. The driver of the vehicle complied and pulled over, according to police.

“The driver presented no issues at any time,” the spokesman said. “The passenger, however, immediately got out of the Mercedes with two large butcher knives, one in each hand, and began running around erratically.”

Video footage shows the unidentified passenger exited the car before Royle can be heard screaming “drop the knife.

The driver of the Mercedes can also be heard shouting “what are you doing?” to his passenger.

 

Royle backed up as the passenger then opened the driver’s door to the police vehicle while Royle shouts “Get out of the car, drop the knife. Drop the knife.”

 

Royle can be heard pleading with the passenger to drop his weapons, telling him “I don’t want to shoot you” as the passenger continues to run around with the knives.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said in a press conference that the shooting took place in the city’s Bordeaux neighborhood. He identified the officer as Christopher Royer.

“The passenger immediately got out of the Mercedes with two large butcher knives, one in each hand, and began running around erratically,” Aaron also said.

Aaron said that the suspect who was shot was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“What you don’t see on there is that, when he was down, there were five officers who rendered aid to this individual,” Police Chief John Drake said. “He did everything he could, I felt,” Drake added. “He retreated, he asked the individual to drop the weapon several times, continued charging at him, and he was left with no choice.”
