NYPD Union Head: “Stop Treating Us Like Animals”

As if being a police officer and putting your life on the line daily isn’t difficult enough.

Now police officers have to deal with complete disrespect from the very people they’re sworn to protect.

Since the beginning of the George Floyd “protests,” we’ve seen countless instances of police officers being harassed and injured across the country.

And many of them are getting fed up with it.

The head of the New York Police Union came out Tuesday and pleaded with everyone to “stop treating us like animals and thugs.”

More details from the National Review on the matter:

The head of New York State’s police unions slammed criticism of officers following George Floyd demonstrations, saying police were being treated like “animals.”

“I am not Derek Chauvin; they are not him,” Mike O’Meara, president of the New York Association of Police Benevolent Associations, told reporters on Tuesday while gesturing to officers gathered behind him. “He killed someone. We didn’t.”

O’Meara referred to one of the officers who killed Floyd, an African American resident of Minneapolis. The killing sparked massive demonstrations in major American cities, which have devolved into rioting in many instances.

“The legislators, the press, everybody’s trying to shame us into being embarrassed about our profession,” O’Meara said. “Stop treating us like animals and thugs, and start treating us with some respect….We’ve been left out of the conversation, we’ve been vilified — it’s disgusting.”

The NYPD has faced challenges containing widespread rioting and looting, and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Sunday that New York City would divert some funding away from its police force to other programs. At the height of the rioting, Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “The police in New York City were not effective at doing their job….Period.”

NYPD chief Terence Monahan hit back at Cuomo’s remarks the next day.

O’Meara’s statement comes as many on the left across the country are calling for a complete cutoff of funding to police departments:

Who do these people think is going to keep our communities safe if they cutoff funding and continue the disrespect?

Unfortunately, the left is so deep in it that they can’t escape.

Mayor Bill DeBlasio came out and even called for defunding the NYPD in the following clip:

The New York Post reports that additional union members came out and scolded legislators for their lack of support for the police department:

The NYPD’s powerful captains union blasted unnamed “elected officials” in a vitriolic letter to members Saturday, complaining that due to a lack of leadership, police are damned if they crack down on law-breaking George Floyd-death protesters, and damned if they don’t.

The no-win scenario was described by Captains’ Endowment Association President Chris Monahan, who took the helm of the union in December.

“They do not have your back and will use you as a political pawn!” the emailed letter says in bold type of the offending unnamed pols.

“My assessment is ‘Hands off the protester/looter you will be assaulted by them. Hands on the protester/looter you will be assaulted by our elected officials.’ BE CAREFUL!” it warns.

Asked for a clarification, Monahan told The Post, “We just have to see who votes ‘Yes’ for the series of anti-police legislation and who votes no Monday in Albany.”

The email began by offering sympathy to captains buffeted by the crosswinds of policing a pandemic and ten days of protests.

“We are encountering troubling times, between COVID-19, the day after day protest and looting happening in our city, the long hours and cancellation of our RDO’s,” the email begins.

“I commend each one of our members.”

It ends with a promise and a prayer: “Rest assured if the wheel of misfortune falls on any of you, the CEA will be there to defend and protect you.

“Religious or not, at this time Saint Michael must pray for us because our leaders have abandoned us.”

St. Michael is the patron saint of police officers and military personnel.

The NYPD and Mayor Bill de Blasio have often found themselves in conflict since protests over the police-custody death of Floyd in Minneapolis roiled racial tensions nationwide.
