Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says she’s “very seriously” eyeing a run for governor of Arkansas, a position formerly held by her father, Mike Huckabee.

Speaking at a conservative youth group event in Florida, Sanders was asked if she would ever consider running for the office, to which she replied,

“I’m very seriously looking at it right now. I love Arkansas, I lvoe my home state, I am so happy to be back home and we’ll see what happens. But certainly looking at that.”

International Business Times has more to say:

When Sarah Huckabee-Sanders stepped down in June as White House press secretary, rumors sprung up that she may be seeking political office in her home state of Arkansas. Although she was coy about the possibility at the time, it appears she may be preparing to make an official announcement for her intent to run for governor in 2022.

Before her official resignation, President Donald Trump tweeted his endorsement for Sanders as Arkansas governor, saying she would be “fantastic.”

More recently, Sanders, along with the president, appeared at a Turning Point USA event in Florida when she seemingly confirmed that she was in the process of building her campaign. “I’m very seriously looking at [running for governor of Arkansas] right now,” Sanders said at the event. “We’ll see what happens,” she said.

Despite leaving the White House, Sanders has been busy giving interviews and preparing to release a book about her time in the Trump administration. She’s also joined Fox News as a political commentator.

Before the event in Florida, Sanders told the New York Times that she felt as though she had “been called” to run for office, but that helping Trump retain the White House in 2020 would be her main focus for now.

National Review also stated:

On Sunday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders continued to fan speculation that she will use her former perch as White House press secretary to jump-start an Arkansas gubernatorial campaign.

While speaking at the conservative group Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit, Sanders was asked if she had set her sights on the governor’s office.

“I’m very seriously looking at it right now,” Sanders said. “My focus is on making sure we get the president re-elected first in 2020, and we’ll have plenty of time to focus on 2022 after that.” The Arkansas gubernatorial election will take place in 2022, when current governor Asa Hutchinson’s second term expires. Arkansas law prohibits governors from serving more than two terms after elections.

Sanders’ father Mike Huckabee was Arkansas governor from 1996 to 2006. Huckabee was promoted from lieutenant governor in 1996, and then elected in both 1998 and 2002.
