It looks like the tide is turning when it comes to impeachment.
Not only are polls showing that the public is swinging in Trump’s favor, but the utter clown show that was the impeachment hearings last week haven’t even convinced all Democrats that Trump should be removed from office.
In fact, the impeachment hearings seem to have actually changed the minds of former supporters of impeachment, one of them being Democrat Rep. Brenda Lawrence of Michigan.
In June, Lawrence told CNN,
“I feel we should begin that process. If we impeach him, he is still sitting in the White House because the Senate must act. Our democracy is bigger than Donald Trump, and we need to act.”
She also told The Dean Obeidallah Show in October,
“I feel strongly that for my legacy, for my time in history, sitting here at this table with an oath of office to protect this country, to protect the democracy of the United States of America, I cannot sit silent, that I must move forward with [impeachment] because this is egregious,” Lawrence said at the time.
But, that’s all out the window now!
Now, Rep. Lawrence says she sees no “value” in impeaching President Trump. As she explained,
“You can censure, you don’t have to remove the president. We are so close to an election. I will tell you, sitting here, knowing how divided this country is, I don’t see the value of kicking him out of office, but I do see the value of putting down a marker saying his behavior is not acceptable.”
What do you think?
Is Rep. Lawrence the first Democrat to turn against impeachment?
Will there be more coming?
Listen to the previous comments Rep. Lawrence made in support of impeachment just one month ago in this recording from her interview with Dean Obeidallah:
The Washington Examiner has more to say about Rep. Lawrence breaking with her party on impeachment:
Democratic Rep. Brenda Lawrence of Michigan now favors censuring President Trump after backing impeachment proceedings over allegations that he withheld military aid from Ukraine for his personal benefit.
Lawrence appeared on the Michigan radio show No BS News Hour with host Charlie LeDuff on Sunday to discuss the impeachment process in the House. Lawrence told LeDuff, to his surprise, that she does not support removing the president from office and that she would ask her caucus to censure him instead.
"We are so close to an election. I will tell you, sitting here knowing how divided this country is, I don't see the value of taking him out of office," Lawrence said. "I do see the value of putting down a marker saying his behavior is not acceptable."
She continued, "I want to censure. I want it on the record that the House of Representatives did their job and they told this president and any president coming behind him that this is unacceptable behavior and, under our Constitution, we will not allow it."
Lawrence also said she would have a "discussion with the party and with the caucus" to censure Trump instead of impeaching him.
Breitbart added:
Lawrence’s comments on the House impeachment process came during a discussion with Charlie LeDuff on the Michigan radio show No BS News Hour. Instead of removal from office, Lawrence hopes her colleagues will seek to censure the president.
Lawrence said:
We are so close to an election. I will tell you, sitting here knowing how divided this country is, I don’t see the value of taking him out of office. I do see the value of putting down a marker saying his behavior is not acceptable.
I want to censure. I want it on the record that the House of Representatives did their job and they told this president and any president coming behind him that this is unacceptable behavior and, under our Constitution, we will not allow it.
Lawrence added that she aims to have a “discussion with the party and with the caucus” in order to censure Trump, rather than impeaching him.
In contrast to the remarks she made on Sunday, Lawrence once seemed to be on board with impeachment in an October 4th interview with Sirius XM host Dean Obeidallah.
“I feel strongly that for my legacy, for my time in history, sitting here at this table with an oath of office to protect this country, to protect the democracy of the United States of America, I cannot sit silent, that I must move forward with [impeachment] because this is egregious,” Lawrence said at the time.
The Daily Wire also had the following to say:
Democrat Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI) changed her mind on Sunday on supporting the impeachment of President Donald Trump — something she supported just a few months ago — claiming now that the polls are turning against the Democrats she does not see the value of removing the president from office.
Lawrence, who beat her Republican opponent by 64 points in 2018, told the “No BS News Hour with Charlie LeDuff” that she no longer thought that impeachment was a good idea.
“You can censure, you don’t have to remove the president,” Lawrence said. “We are so close to an election. I will tell you, sitting here, knowing how divided this country is, I don’t see the value of kicking him out of office, but I do see the value of putting down a marker saying his behavior is not acceptable.”
“I want to censure,” Lawrence continued. “I want it on the record that the House of Representatives did their job and they told this president and any president coming behind him that this is unacceptable behavior and, under our Constitution, we will not allow it.”
“I’ll be g***amned,” the host responded to Lawrence. “To hear you say, and you are a Democrat, and you are a liberal-minded person; I know you don’t like Trump. For the betterment of all of us, in an election year, it’s unwise to tear him from the chair. Is that how you think?”
“Yeah,” Lawrence answered.
National Review noted that Lawrence told CNN on June 12: “I feel we should begin that process. If we impeach him, he is still sitting in the White House because the Senate must act. Our democracy is bigger than Donald Trump, and we need to act.”
