Republicans Fire Back After AOC Says Abolishing DHS Is “Not Radical”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not a fan of the Department of Homeland Security, the federal security branch dedicated to keeping Americans safe since the terror attacks that shook our nation on September 11, 2001.

In the past, AOC has called for the DHS, along with ICE, to be abolished and recently reiterated the call to action, claiming that nixing the DHS would not be “radical.”

Watch Cortez’s statement here via a video shared by Ryan Saavedra on Twitter:

Twitter users fired back at AOC over the ridiculous call to get rid of the DHS.

Take a look at these reponse tweets:

It's not just Twitter users who think AOC's "not radical" desire to get rid of the DHS is baseless and stupid.

Former Bush VP's daughter and Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney publically took a stand against AOC, calling the Democrat naivety with regards to lawmaking "absolute irresponsibility."

On this, the Washington Examiner commented:

"The level of just absolute irresponsibility now that we are seeing in the Democratic side among someone who clearly is one of the intellectual leaders now of the Democratic Party is really stunning," Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, told reporters on Wednesday. "And we will continue to fight as Republicans to make sure we're doing everything we can, everything necessary to uphold our constitutional obligations to defend this nation."

Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, told New Yorker Radio last week that Homeland Security ought to be nixed because the country needed "to undo a lot of the egregious ... mistakes that the Bush administration did." The freshman lawmaker added, "It’s a very qualified and supported position, at least in terms of evidence, and in terms of being able to make the argument that we never should of created DHS in the early 2000s.”

But Cheney, the House Republican Conference chairwoman, defended Homeland Security, which was formed in 2002 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks when her father, Dick Cheney, was Bush's vice president.

Business Insider gave further details on what AOC wants when it comes to our nation's security:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she supports abolishing the Department of Homeland Security, a cabinet department that has come under fire for overseeing the detainment of migrant children in harsh conditions.

New Yorker editor David Remnick asked Ocasio-Cortez  during an interview for the New Yorker Radio Hour whether she supported "getting rid" of DHS, an agency that the Bush administration  established a year after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

"I think so," Ocasio-Cortez responded. "I think we need to undo a lot of the egregious mistakes that the Bush administration did."

The New York Democrat cited her recent trip to a migrant detention facility in El Paso, Texas run by the Border Patrol, a part of DHS. In the interview, she described conditions there as "inhumane" and said they were being treated "like animals."

Some Republicans were quick to defend the agency's mission. Rep. Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, blasted Ocasio-Cortez's remarks and said they reflect a level of "absolute irresponsibility,"  the Washington Examiner reported.

"They undertake fundamental cyber intel operations for the nation, Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA is part of the department of Homeland Security. It is a crucial agency and a crucial set of operations that keep this nation, keep our citizens safe," Cheney told reporters.

But, hey, let's not be too upset about AOC's big mouth!

She's doing her part as much as we are to get Trump re-elected in 2020!

As this Twitter user pointed out,
