DirecTV to DROP Newsmax

In the newest reason why you should ditch DirecTV, the company announced it will drop conservative news station Newsmax.

The AT&T-owned multichannel distributor dropped the conservative channel OAN last year.

The move is DirecTV’s latest caving to the woke, leftist mob to censor conservative voices.

“At midnight Tuesday, AT&T’s DirecTV cut Newsmax’s signal, immediately shutting the network off from more than 13 million customers of the satellite service, DirecTV Stream, and U-Verse,” Newsmax stated.

DirecTV cut Newsmax from its list of channels despite being one of the highest-rated cable news channels in the country.

From Newsmax:

Despite Newsmax being the 4th highest-rated cable news channel in the nation, a top 20 cable news channel overall, and watched by 25 million Americans on cable alone, according to Nielsen, DirecTV said it was taking the step as a “cost-cutting” measure and would never pay Newsmax a cable license fee.

DirecTV pays cable license fees to all top 75 cable channels and to all 22 liberal news and information channels it carries. Almost all of these channels are paid hefty license fees significantly more than Newsmax was seeking — and despite the fact that most of the channels have much lower ratings than Newsmax.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) said the TV provider’s actions showed “a political decision to censor conservative media, which is a red flag for the First Amendment.”

“This is a blatant act of political discrimination and censorship against Newsmax,” Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax said.

Ruddy explained that extremely liberal stations with ratings lower than Newsmax receive cable license fees from DirecTV.

However, Newsmax and OAN get dropped by the provider and lose access to millions of viewers.

As the Washington Examiner reported, House Republicans sent a letter to DirecTV about the de-platforming of Newsmax:

Hunt sent a letter exclusively obtained by the Washington Examiner to DirecTV and its owners, AT&T and TPG Capital, co-signed by 41 other Republican lawmakers ahead of the company’s “deplatforming” of Newsmax.

“I am deeply troubled by DirecTV’s decision to remove Newsmax from their lineup of channels,” Hunt said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Deplatforming Newsmax is the latest development in the Left’s ongoing campaign to purge voices they disagree with from the public sphere. This decision by DirecTV and TPG Capital will cut off tens of millions of viewers who rely on Newsmax for their news and information.”

Hunt said millions of people turn to Newsmax as a source of trusted information and people need access to a free and fair press.

“I am sure that DirecTV will claim that removing Newsmax from their lineup of channels was purely a business decision, but that is hard to accept when liberal news channels like Vice Media continue to remain on the air. Vice is a ratings failure for DirecTV, yet they continue to profit from their relationship with DirecTV,” Hunt added.
