Netherlands to Shut Down Up to 3,000 Farms to Comply With EU Climate Change Rules

It follows massive farmer protests that erupted this summer in response to a government plan to reduce nitrogen emissions by 50% by 2030.

Farmers believe the measure unfairly targets the agricultural sector and blames them for the largest portion of nitrogen emissions in the country.

“The government will acquire large nitrogen emitters as part of a voluntary and one-time offer, said Nitrogen Minister Christianne van der Wal-Zeggelink in a letter to the parliament in the Hague,” Bloomberg noted.

The cabinet has set aside €24.3 billion to fund the transition.

The target, designed to comply with European Union rules on reducing nitrogen pollution, prompted uproar among farmers shortly after it was first presented in June. If implemented, the government’s plan would require cuts of as much of 95% in emissions in some provinces and see the livestock population in the Netherlands reduced by a third over the next eight years.

The protests drew global headlines this summer as farm-owners brought their cows to the Hague, blocking roads and prompting the agriculture minister to quit.

If not enough farmers sell their businesses, then the government may have to force some of them out of business, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a press conference on Friday.

Consumers in the Netherlands paid 11 percent more for food in June than a year earlier, meaning that food prices increased more than the overall inflation of 8.6 percent. The last time food prices rose by more than 10 percent over a year was in 1976, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Wednesday.

Food prices increased in all categories in June 2022. Meat and fish saw the most significant increase at 15 percent. A piece of meat cost over 16 percent more in June than a year earlier. Fish prices rose 10 percent. Dairy products also saw a big price increase at 14 percent, with butter prices increasing the most.

During the farmer protests, opposition leader Geert Wilders released a letter showing the Netherlands WEF-puppet government allegedly wants to use expropriated agricultural land for asylum centers.

“Here’s the proof. It’s just there. The farmer has to leave because they want to build an application center for asylum seekers on his land. They are destroying the Netherlands completely. Our farmers gone, the fortune seekers in. It’s funny that people are angry,” Wilders tweeted (translated).
