Newsom Reveals Anti-Gun Reason for Joining Trump’s Truth Social

After Donald Trump was kicked off of Twitter, he and his team got busy creating an alternate platform that came to be known as Truth Social.

Although plenty of prominent conservative voices have joined in on the social media conversation, more than a few leftists are also there.

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, for example, just became one of the newest members of the site.

According to The Hill:

In a video supplementing his announcement, he said that red states made up the majority of those with the highest murder rates.

Newsom is likely referring to a stat offered by center-left think tank Third Way, which said in a report in March amid rising U.S. crime rates that “8 of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2020 voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election this century.”

The addition of California governor, who has floated as a possible presidential candidate, is potentially a boon to Trump’s struggling social network given that it could prompt other high-profile Democrats to join.

Here’s a video Newsom posted to his Twitter account in which he explained his reasoning for joining Truth Social.

Like many of his fellow progressives, Newsom has been attacking pro-gun conservatives in the wake of a deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Of course, many prominent conservatives have made the case that most of the gun control measures being pitched by Democrats would have little impact on curbing gun violence.

There is an effort in Congress to reach a bipartisan agreement on some gun control measures, but Democrats are not in a position to cater to the far left.

According to CNN:

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” that the measure “is going to be a bill with a lot of money for law enforcement, schools and mental health. All of that money will be eligible for states, whether they pass red flag laws or not. We have a specific incentive fund, though, for states that do choose to pass red flag laws.”

A bipartisan group of senators, including 10 Republicans, announced an agreement on principles for gun safety legislation Sunday, but the bill text has not yet been written. In addition to closing the ‘boyfriend loophole’ and enhancing the review process for buyers under 21, the proposal would provide significant funding to help states create new red flag laws, which are intended to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose threats to themselves or others. The 19 states — and Washington, DC — that already have such laws on the books would be eligible for funding to improve the effectiveness of their established programs.
